* Mr. Sa Pinto, your name has once again emerged as a potential candidate for the head coaching position at Esteghlal. What is your reaction?
Esteghlal is a club that has always held special significance for me. My time at this club was a unique experience, and I formed a close bond with the players and, more importantly, with the fans. If a professional and clear environment is established, I would eagerly return. I have a strong motivation to achieve success with this team.
* What do you mean by a professional environment?
I am referring to transparent management, financial order, clear technical authority, and mutual respect. In my previous stint, we faced issues that should not arise again. If I were to return, there must be structural assurances that allow me to focus entirely on the team and results. Surely you recall the obstacles the past management placed before us that hindered Esteghlal’s success; despite these adversities, we endeavored to fulfill our responsibilities to the best of our abilities. I’m not suggesting that had those limitations not existed, we would have undoubtedly been champions, but at that time, the prior management made every effort to prevent Esteghlal’s success! Nevertheless, what’s past is past, and it’s better not to dwell on it and focus on the future.
* It has been said that in the past year, the club’s management has reached out to you three times regarding taking over Esteghlal’s coaching. Why did those discussions not yield results?
Yes, I received calls from the club’s management. I always responded with respect, but the negotiations lacked professionalism and seriousness. At times, I encountered behaviors that I perceived as disrespectful. However, due to my affection for Esteghlal and its fans, I am open to returning if the conditions are right.
* Currently, you are facing a ban. Does this matter impede your potential return?
Not at all! My assistants and I are fully prepared to devise a proper plan during this period. The ban is part of football, but it will not affect our teamwork.
* Do you still consider the football environment in Iran suitable for work? Especially in light of past experiences?
Yes, I now have a better understanding of the Iranian football scene, its overall conditions, and Iranian players compared to before. The experiences I’ve gathered from my previous term will undoubtedly assist me in making better decisions. Of course, Iranian football has its unique challenges, but I am entirely ready to work in such environments.
* If you were to return to Esteghlal, what goals would you set?
The goal is clear: to achieve championships and bring glory, this time on an Asian level. Esteghlal is a prestigious club with the potential to shine in the AFC Champions League. I have plans for this goal and am eager for success. If my return happens, it will solely focus on building a competitive team at the continental level.
* Finally, what message do you have for Esteghlal fans?
I have always drawn energy from the support of Esteghlal fans. They have truly been exceptional. If an opportunity for my return arises, I want to fight for them again and restore success to both the club and its supporters.
